Midnight Motivations and Musings 38…

1458733608262[1]

It’s sad and amusing at the same time when people come across with the perception that good fortune comes from luck.

That is absolutely balderdash and misleading. Good fortune has to find you working on it.

Yes, indeed there are those who have been beneficiary’s of fortune that they’ve not necessarily worked for, by virtue of birth or winning a lottery, but the ratio is so insignificant for anyone to fold their hands and expect lady luck to come smiling with shiny teeth.

Remember the saying that ‘HEAVEN helps those who help themselves.

When you take those necessary steps each day, things align and the windows of possibilities keeps opening up.

Nerves of Steel…

Our nerves are stretched and frayed
And yes, we champ at our bits by it all
At the spate of hateful and violent attacks
Rocking the World to minutes of silence
…and viral hashtags

How can we condone this?
How can we continue like this?
What kind of horrible lives these people must live.
To harbour souls so embittered?
…and nerves made of steel.

Complete sensitivity is lost to other peoples’ lives
There are hardly words to explain such horror
And the damage that hate can do
As yet again, we are shocked from lulled senses
…and all I ask is when? When will it come to an end?

HAVE YOU GOT A THICK HIDE? Writers Quote Wednesday.

Rhino, Rhinoceros, Armor, India, Animal, Strong

“I would advise anyone who aspires to a writing career that before developing his talent he would be wise to develop a thick hide.”
—Harper Lee, WD

I can’t agree more with this quote above. I know one or two people, who for better want of a word to describe their predicament they ‘are ashamed of saying that they write.’

They are perpetually on the defensive about their hobby and hope to become a successful writer, so they chose to hide it.

Sometimes, I wonder if being a writer is such a terrible thing, except of course when we lop off your head in our stories and paint you black too 😉

For such people, I will say, grow skins as thick as that of a Rhinoceros, if you are definitely sure that this is the life you want to live. It’s grits, nerves and more grits.

If you feel shame for something that you love doing, then maybe, it’s not yet your thing, otherwise, how do you expect to make a headway with it?

Be prepared to hear things like the type of conversation I once had with man in the gym, who wanted to know what kind of things I write, he was sure that I wrote only housewife’s romance or sexy stuff *his words not mine*, which by the way I like to read, depending on my mood. I read extensively and across all genres.

I simply didn’t appreciate his stereo-typing and didn’t even want to bother educating him further. I cast him as a dirty villain in a short fairy tale and gave him a crooked, bumpy nose too 😉

I have had several requests to write articles for free because they feel that it will give me exposure, and in my mind, I am like ‘You don’t say!’ :/

Be prepared to hear things like:

  • Are you really planning to make a living out of this? Asked in a condescending voice
  • I wish I had your opportunity, to just daydream and write :/
  • You know that writing is a dying industry right? In my mind, I am holding back from shouting, no you are the one dying, you buffoon! I didn’t utter that aloud did I 😉
  • Have you gone viral yet? I guess you have now become a flu.

So, while you are getting on with it, saddle up and let the rude, inept comments roll off your back. Don’t sweat it, what they think doesn’t matter, it’s what you think that matters.

Locomotion’s…

Watching people is totally a favourite sport, so it’s no hardship taking photos of their movement.

I can actually sit and count how many men who strolled past in a suit, or tie, or whatever catches my fancy at that point in time. It’s total fun I tell you and if your eyes are keen enough sometimes, you are rewarded with something to smile about.

I was out all day and there’s no time to simulate night movement, so between the gym, school, grabbing a bite at the mall, I think I managed to get some blurry movement shots for today’s Photo 101 theme ‘moment and motion.’

Exhaling Loudly…This is my life.

1458736407007[1]

I know it’s not weekend yet, but I am thankful that we are halfway there, or as in my case, almost a day to weekend and the school Spring breaks commences on Friday. YAYYYYY!!!

Our weekend’s over here in the Middle East starts on Thursday evenings and sometimes, it makes my mind go wonky, when the work week starts on Sunday’s and other parts of the World are still on a weekend.

It’s been one of those weeks that’s just bleh; waking up at past 4 am and making the children’s breakfast and food for school with one eye open.

I know that being a mother, weekend does not necessarily spell idling, but some things are taken out of the hectic equation.

My mouth will probably get twisted seven ways from talking, settling squabbles and I will probably pull my hair out now and again, for these days that squad will be fully at home, adrenaline filled and looking up to Mama the squad entertainer extraordinaire to keep them focused and entertained.

I shall however, thoroughly enjoy not having the infernal red alarm clock go off,  just when I am getting into the zen part of the sleep; at least for the next two weeks. It even rings in my head when I am awake :/

On the other hand, I am equally thankful for a lovely blogger’s bash held in this space. The supportive turn out was just awesome 🙂

I am equally excited that the cover of my collected poetry will soon be ready. There’ll definitely be a sneak peek.

What are the itty-bitty things that your heart knows thanks for?

Do share if you will. Thank you.

Human Bots In The Midst Of The Dirty Spam Bots!

1458703462081[1]

I have a full spam box and decided to slowly weed through and sift with a fine tooth comb, because I have actually unknowingly weeded out a lot of good comments with the load of rubbish before, so I was being careful this time, though it was quite lengthy.

Amidst the offer for watermelon flavoured Viagra, several trolls, crazy offers and all manners of Chinese writing that I couldn’t make out what on earth it was saying, I saw YOU, YOU, YOU AND YOU

I wonder what is going on and why I have lots of decent humans mingled with trashy bots 😐😕?

Apologies if you sent comments and didn’t hear from me.

I am in the process of disentangling you from the weedy trash 😉

I was of the good mind to chew WordPress’s ears, but changed it quickly because I don’t want them to let some mad dogs out of the spam cage and into my arena.

P. S. Did I ever tell you about my green, Johnny just come, new-beginner days when I was responding to comments from bots? Ah!! I guess that’s a story for another day 🙂

My regards,

Jacqueline Oby-Ikocha

Midnight Motivations and Musings 37…

1458469181715[1]

This predicament of complacency and arrogance happens and manifests in so many aspects of our lives very easily.

That tendency to feel comfortable, not wanting to rock the boat and just go with the flow once we’ve carved a sweet niche leads us down this track.

We can be contented with what we have and yet strive to keep improving our lot, because life itself is a consistent flow that does not stagnate.

The tendency to also grow arrogant and superior, once we start having that sense of accomplishment is also a penchant that easily sneaks in.

We should remember and strive to keep our heads bowed in humility, even as we stand tall in confidence.
