Valuable Thoughts From Others

Eugenia “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.:-Maya Angelou

Martha L. Shaw: This quote resonates with me! We never walk alone! I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Psalm 32:8 ESV

Willowdot: A beautiful affirmation!

Senoorway: I wish life would be that simple, but if you’re not a multi-millionaire for a start, there are duties to perform and chores to be done – just about every day in your life.
If you have children (or pets) it doubles up. An ideal dream, perhaps, but at least my world isn’t nearly there! Not by a looong shot! And I’ve been working at it for soon 82 years!

Thelonelyauthorblog: Beautiful post. Love the promise to self-love. More people need to make that promise.

Poetry/Poems

Travesty…

when leaders stole a Nation
from under its feet
they said it would make us great
like we have never known before

but we sat down
and we drank wine
forgetting to weep in our cups
and mourn our loss

they sold our land
for shillings for their pockets
heritage given to men
who held them by the balls

bereft, we are left adrift
‘cos travesty besieges us;
for we were sold falsehood
and promises that leak like a basket

Thought For Tuesday…

Never let others project their sense of limited ability on you. The greater part of society and school rob us big time. We are made to feel that our abilities are limited and the continued reinforcement of these limitations erodes our creative confidence.

Every single one of us is born with incredible imagination, intelligence, and intuition, but when we are untrained to tap into these powers they simply shrivel and die.

As adults, many of us are lugging around the baggage of all the ‘you can’t and ‘limiting mindset’ that we acquired in childhood. Due to these habits that we learned growing up, constant settling, avoidance of risk, and learned helplessness become a norm.  Most people settle to such an extent that they believe that ‘this is as good as it gets and can’t be better.’ They are contented trudging along the treadmill of a mediocre life,  barely breaking any sweat and never getting anywhere.

Your fear must never be the fear of being different but the fear of settling for mediocrity.

What About You? Affirmation Challenge Day 47

I am committed to the promises that I made to myself. The promise of self-love. The promise to take better care of myself, body, mind, and spirit. The promise to appreciate myself. The promise to hold on to my dreams and to give them my best shots. The promise not to let the past be an anchor that holds me down. The promise to keep a positive mind and to let love be my compass.

The Real Meaning Behind Working Hard

People all over the world will tell you that “working hard” is a piece of advice to take with a grain of salt. It’s not exactly clear why they think that (and sometimes they fail to understand it themselves) so let’s take a dive into the meaning of working hard and why everyone should do it – at least to a certain extent.

Having Endurance

Hard work doesn’t just mean putting in a little effort to reach your goals. Hard work means enduring a journey of effort, pain and occasionally misfortune. It’s all about having that endurance to keep working hard throughout your life and never giving up.

It’s one of the most desirable qualities in people. Having that endurance to keep on working longer than others will put you at an advantage and ultimately make you more successful than others. If success is measured in the amount of time you put into something, then those with more endurance can ultimately last longer.

However, it doesn’t mean pushing yourself to a point where you physically collapse. There are some people that are perfectly capable of working long hours and putting in more effort, and it’s ultimately down to how much pleasure you get from putting in an extra effort and going the extra mile to see better results than people who are lazy and have put less time into their dreams.

You Define Hard Work

You’ll occasionally see hypocrites telling you that hard work is X or Y, and they’ll say that their definition of hard work is the be-all-end-all. However, you’ll find that they rarely ever meet their requirements of “hard work” and they’re just blowing steam.

Don’t listen to these types of people. You will define hard work by your own measurements. Some people consider it working themselves until they’re physically tired, while others consider it completing a task with plenty of time left to spare. Entrepreneurs might consider hard work to be making more profit than their projected numbers, and artists might consider hard work as being able to stay consistent.

Define hard work yourself–don’t let someone do it for you.

The Problem with Overworking

One of the reasons why people say that hard work is bad is due to overworking. If you find that you’re never given a break and that your employer is constantly pushing you, then this lawyer here can help you get a break before you injure yourself. The idea is to constantly try and push your limits so you can discover what you’re really capable of, but you should also keep in mind that you shouldn’t overwork yourself to the point you’re hurting your body and mind.

Hard work is important and it carries a different meaning from person to person. However, you need to remember to always take breaks and let yourself relax both physically and mentally. Hard work and success are long-term marathons that take endurance, not sprints that are over in a few seconds!

This is a collaborative post.

Thought For Thursday…

Rivalry has some positive sides. It might energize and motivate you. However, it should never hold such power over you that it diverts you from your own path and individual strength in a blind pursuit of others.

Hypocrites! I’m Judging You.

These days, my Christain brethren are becoming far too annoying. It never ceases to amaze me on how some people find it very easy to critique the doings of others, yet when you take a good peek at them, they are full of potholes of errors that need to be filled up.

These ‘oversabi pipus‘ are usually quick in recommending what their neighbours should do to stop the fire from consuming their domain, meanwhile very slow in advising themselves and the smouldering embers of their own burnt out domain serves as an evidence of their hypocrisy and inability to put out that same fire.

I suggest you save such priceless advice for your good self and so you know, I am judging you through my slanted eyes.

Footnote:

Oversabi pipus – a broken English/pidgin English that ‘means people who know it all.’ It’s a concoction of Portuguese, English and West African flavour.

To break it down:

Sabir – A Portuguese word – To Know

Over – in this case meaning excess

pipus – West African twist for People

Writing

Raise your writing bar – Master how to eliminate that passive voice.

Passive Voice, Active Voice, Eliminate Passive Voice, Readers Attention, Raise Writing Bar, Professional Writing

An important factor that holds your readers’ attention from the get-go is the voice your article/book/post is written in. Readers prefer active voice sentences and writing in the active voice communicates our message effectively. The active voice makes your writing stronger, less wordy and tiresome. It clearly identifies an action and who is performing that action.

On the other hand, writing in the passive voice which is a common mistake that could easily slip into your writing fails to hold your readers’ interest and simply makes your writing boring and hard to read.

Mastering the skill of writing in the active voice is easier than you anticipated and less tedious than finding those little grammatical errors and typos. One way to know if you are writing in the active or passive voice is to find the subject of the sentence and decide if the subject is doing the action or being acted upon.

How to Recognize and Eliminate Passive Voice

In the active voice, your subject is doing the action.

  1. Jake ran past the man.
  2. Susan cooked the food.

In the passive voice, the subject is acted upon.

  1. The man was run past by Jake.
  2. The food was cooked by Susan.

Reading these two sentences you know that it doesn’t sound natural or seem right.

Another easy giveaway of the passive voice is to look for verbs stuck together. A passive voice adds other helping verbs such as ‘to be, being, has been, will be, are, is, was, were’ to a verb that could stand alone.

You can instantly fix your passive voice by rewriting your sentence so that the subject of your sentence comes before the verb.

Your active voice resembles spoken language. When we speak, we automatically speak in the active voice and our writing should mirror this.

For instance, you would never say:

My bicycle (subject) was ridden (action) to the park by me.

Instead, you would say:

I (subject) rode (action) my bicycle (object) to the park.

As always there’s an exception to the rule where the passive voice is preferable: Read more…

What About You? Affirmation Challenge Day 46

I am a self-contained oasis of peace.

For me, being a self-contained oasis of peace does not imply floating in a bubble. It means accepting myself to the core of my being.  It means being able to forgive myself for my mistakes. It means being totally fine with who I am and not struggling to become another person that I am not even though I also realistically evaluate things that I need to improve upon. It means NO Shame. None!Image result for image quotes about inner peace

Being at peace doesn’t mean being perfect or detached and does not imply that all that needs to be done has been done. It’s striving to find balance, understanding my dreams, desires, beliefs, values, and goals and aligning them. It means walking my path with no apologies, hesitation or second-guessing. Being at peace is realizing that some things just don’t matter and letting them go.

Being at peace with myself is understanding that not everyone will like me and that I may not like them as well, but having enough perspective to treat everyone with respect.

I am not constantly high on life. I have many bad days when I feel angry at myself or disappointed with my choices. I have low moments when depression and PTSD weigh me down, but even in the midst of chaos, there’s a calmness of spirit.
