Passage To Where?…Mundane Monday

We came across this passage during our weekend meandering and I would have loved a little more wandering, but my dear Himself reminds me that I am not Hercules Poirot nor Christopher Columbus and I partially satisfied my curiousity by taking a photo from the entrance.

I still can’t help wondering what’s behind those walls. I think my interest is stoked by the lamps that light up the passage since it was getting dark 😉

Do you ever get seized with curiousity that you need all your common sense to squelch?

14 steps to find your Hope…

An African proverb says that “hunger that has expectations does not kill.” The expectation might be the knowledge that there’s Yam in the barn to be roasted to satiate the empty stomach.

Webster dictionary defines hope as a desire accompanied by the expectation of or belief in fulfilment.

Hope is an active and confident expectation which is not only dynamic in it’s evolving nature but also life-sustaining and it stresses on two things that are invisible as well as futuristic.

At times, people struggle to find meaning and purpose in their daily lives and to them, the word ‘Hope’ sounds like a vague concept that’s irrelevant in their lives.

The fact is that if you want to start to see your life in the possibilities that you wish, you need to take certain steps to achieve that. These steps can be broken down into segments.

  1. Envision your life: This might take some practice but it’s worthwhile to take the time to try and envision what you want your life to look like. What type of life do you imagine is the best for you? Write your vision and do a review from time to time.
  2. Do a comparative analysis: Compare your life at present with your ideal vision for where you want your life to head to or to be. Is your analysis far apart? Are you headed in the right direction? Have some aspects of your vision materialised? These are pointers to note and beside each point, take note of the basic steps that you are required to take, broken down in simple, realistic goals.
  3. Are your expectations unreasonable? It is a good thing to dream big, but your big dreams have to be dreams that are realisable over time when the necessary steps are gradually put into practise. Are you dreaming of being a millionaire when you don’t even bother to acquire the understanding and mindset required to pursue such dream? Start with goals that are more effective in your current circumstance and when that has been put in place, you will find that the next step becomes easier.
  4. Don’t take on too many things at a time. That can lead to a sense of hopelessness when it seems as if everything is slow.
  5. Push your boundaries beyond your comfort zone as often as is reasonable without getting it totally imbalanced that it becomes overwhelming.
  6. Set SMART goals that are relevant to achieving your vision. SMART stands for specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic and time-bound.
  7. These steps will help to teach you how to acknowledge your strength and to build on them. Keep an eye on your positive accomplishments no matter how little they may seem. Appreciating yourself now and again, goes a long way to boost your confidence in yourself.
  8. You must cultivate supportive relationships that boost your morale, inspires and motivates you. As much as possible, eliminate toxic relationships and replace them with enabling connections.
  9. Engage in activities that will enhance your personality and life such as new skills or sports and also other causes that give you an opportunity to give back to others, like volunteering in your community. Don’t alienate yourself.
  10. Keep track of your progress by writing a progress report or journaling at the end of each week. This should also take your emotions into cognizance, how you feel about each day, what you are happy or not happy about…
  11. Don’t neglect yourself. As a matter of fact, this is the first duty that you owe yourself. Eat properly balanced meals, rest sufficiently 6-8 hours each night, hydrate, exercise and nourish your mind.
  12. As you progress, identify the stressors that bring on your anxiety and sense of hopelessness and develop anticipated steps to counter them, such as deep breathing, detoxing the mind, brisk walking, talking to others….sometimes, a bit of counselling from the right quarters can go a long way.
  13. Don’t discount your negative feelings. Face your negative thoughts and stop letting them get the better of you by questioning and understanding them.
  14. Keep your focus on the things that are within your circle of influence and take it a day at a time.

Hope has unquestionable results, but we must realise that it’s an attitude that we must work on each day.

Working on hope helps to change the way we see and value ourselves.

It positively affects what we do with our lives, our talents and time.

It brings us inner peace and a sense of well-being.

It builds our endurance level, our courage and confidence.

I have found from experience that reading books, materials of those who dared to hope and surmount challenges, encourages and motivates me.

My hope rests on God’s Grace. I hope that you will find this article to be useful.

She Surprised Him…non-fiction

He scoffed in disdain
underestimating her abilities
but she surprised him
when she set her clipped wings
and flew…

One should never underestimate the strength of a determined woman, for it might take forever but she’ll walk far.

This prompt reminds me of a couple I knew back home.

The man married his wife as a teenager who was barely out of the schoolroom and he tended to treat her in utter disregard, calling her an empty brain who knew nothing quite openly.

It seems to me that he forgot that he was the one who married an empty brain. In essence, he also knew nothing; for two became one.

I gravitate towards people easily, so I got on with the lady even though she was older.

Severally she cried to me about her dreams and how her studies were truncated once her mother died. She got married off at 16 years since their father couldn’t take care of them.

From our interactions, I knew this lady has potentials to amount to more than a foot-mat if she was given the opportunity. and I took it upon myself to help her as much as I could. I encouraged her not to give up on her dreams.

She started taking lessons from her children’s private tutor and without her husband knowing, she enrolled for her General Certificate of Education along with one of her daughters.

I felt such utter pride and joy the day the result was released and my dear friend who was deemed an empty brain according to her husband had made all credits in the five subjects that she registered for.

Unfortunately, she’s solely dependent on her husband who is an ogre and he refused to take responsibility for funding her continued education.

The last time I inquired after her, I heard that she’s petty trading and still hoped that one day, she would get back to school.

For her, I do hope that one day, someday will come.

Let’s get to know the enigmatic Kathy Myrman in her World.

I started interacting with Kat not long after I started blogging a year ago and I’ve found her presence a charming and calming one.

Her posts are witty, creative and inspiring. She also contributes regularly to Echoes of my neighbourhood blogging challenge.

Kathy shares in her words below, her World, her work and her love for writing, her furry friends and family.

By day I can be found in a corporate cubicle, corresponding with and for executives, creating reports, and planning fabulous events and travel to exotic places for other people!

I live in a century-old historic home in Southwest Virginia, in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, though my roots can be traced back to Chicago where I was born. Moving from the Midwest to the South was a bit of a culture shock.

Some people in the Southern United States, particularly rural Virginia still believe that the Civil has not been settled and long for a “do-over”.

Before I had children I did a short stint in the Marine Corps, not because I was uber patriotic. I saw it as a way to move out and get paid while training for a career. As you may have guessed, my strengths were assessed in the Administrative field.

Today, my four grown daughters, have presented me with 6 and counting grandchildren (one is due this July making it 7!) and 4 grand pups.

When we all gather for Thanksgiving or Christmas we are 16 in number. I do love having a big family and we are all very close – an added blessing!

These days I am “mom” to a house full of critters, three dogs, three cats, a tortoise and a sun conure. They keep me busy! I also like to post photos of my beautiful garden and the trees in my neighborhood, but gardening is not my thing.

I am very allergic to green stuff, especially in the Spring, Summer and Fall. So I leave getting in the dirt to my partner Traci and take in the view from my library. Which brings me to things I do love…books! Oodles and oodles of books. We dedicated an entire room to books!

I also like to paint, mostly in acrylic and I play the guitar and love to sing. When my kids were younger, we would travel from nursing homes to revivals, and even private family reunions.

I even cut a few albums of original songs back then. I peddled them out of my trunk and gave most of them away. I discovered poetry a few years later and found that I loved it.

Oh and a few more things I love…trees (yes, I’m a tree hugger!), the ocean (any type of moving water really) and faeries.

You can probably tell I am a pretty positive person. I tend to be optimistic and trusting and not a big planner. Change is exciting to me.

One of my favorite sayings is, “I don’t worry about getting lost, I just change where I want to go.”

I have been writing for most of my life. My first poem when I was around 7 was called The Purple Cow: I never saw a purple cow, I never hope to see one, but I can tell you anyhow, I’d rather see than be one!

Fast forward to the 21st century. I had done a bit of creative writing on social media, but I really didn’t feel comfortable pouring my heart out in that platform. I had signed up with WordPress a year before I actually wrote my first post.

I was so nervous about sharing my writing with anyone, inviting only a few close friends who I knew would be encouraging (it’s good to keep a few of those friends around in a pinch).

In a wild moment of abandon, I threw caution to the wind and left the site “open” to the world when I set my preferences up. To be honest, I didn’t really expect much traffic or notice. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to write or what I wanted this blog to be so it became an online journal more or less.

A place to simmer thoughts, reflections, and perceptions while also sharing a bit of photo art…my new found artistic passion. In the past year, I have discovered Flash Fiction, which I love, and of course my first love, Poetry.

I took the WordPress Blogging 101 class and by joining several challenges I have sought to improve my writing skills. I think the post that sums it all up for me is the one I wrote about my love of writing.

It’s called “A Beautiful Obsession

Well now, I do hope I don’t bore you to tears! My typical day starts at dawn, or 6 am or so. My first order of business is breakfast for all the animals. And of course outside potty breaks for the dogs.

Then it is a shower, fluff and scoot down the road to my day job. Thank goodness for my floor to ceiling windows. As an executive assistant, I spend the next 9-10 hours at my desk working on schedules, travel, memos, spreadsheets, and communication.

In the winter, I leave after the sun has already slipped below the horizon, but in the Spring, Summer and Fall, I enjoy a ride home in the evenings with the top down on my little red Fiat car.

Then it is supper-time for all the animals, an occasional load of laundry or run to the store and finally, when everyone is taken care of, I settle in to watch an occasional reality show or read and write a bit, or both, until it’s time for bed.

I’m a light sleeper, so it’s not unusual for me to be roused at 3 am. I find that I do some of my best writing at this time. Years ago, I loved writing with fountain pens on thick paper. These days I do a lot of writing on my phone’s notepad.

On the weekends, I do chores, shopping, watch movies, get together with family, and if I’m lucky, on Sunday I catch a nice nap. Like I said…I live a rather boring life. Being artistic is what keeps me going. It helps to see the world through a quirky lens.

My art and writing are the color and life of my existence.

When I started the blog, as I mentioned, I really didn’t have any grand plans. Not much has changed. I am so happy to be here. To write, to interact with readers and to read other blogs.

I have been published in a few online and in print anthologies.* That is always a thrill! Because I am writing more, I do think about publishing a book of poetry or short stories every now and then.

I’m thinking if there is a next step, getting my collection of thoughts between the binding of a book might be a nice thing to leave behind for my children and grandchildren. I will also likely sign up for a few more of the WordPress classes. They are well worth one’s time.

I’m sure that you understand this fact that “not everyone you relate with will like you!”

As a matter of fact, some who don’t even know you well enough may not be particularly keen on you for reasons best known to them.

In the secret recess of their heart, such people experience a certain sense of elation and feel better about themselves when you are down and out.

Are you going to join the gang up against yourself?

Are you going to continue to give them the pleasure of seeing you miserable and bleeding to death?

Why do you think that bad news travels so fast and the harbingers of bad news are in far more available quantities *for the price of nothing* than those who are willing to share any positivity?

Just dwell a bit on it!

The sooner you realize these things and pull up yourself by choosing to be happy no matter what, choosing to excel to the best of your ability and choosing to love yourself despite all your shortcomings, that’s when you can begin to experience many turnarounds in your life.

What if?…Streams of Consciousness Saturday.

What if?

An innocuous question that had held me bound to the strictures of stifling memories, until I cut it’s ugly strings.SoCS badge 2015

What if I fail?
What if I had done things differently?
What if the past was not as it is?
What if I hadn’t walked that path that evening?
What if the man hadn’t run into the road?
What if the babies had lived?
What if x,y,z and so much more?

The shoulda, woulda and coulda’s dance before the eyes like taunting pendulum until I seized it’s swaying string and cut it off.

We live in what if’s as if we really could have stopped what has passed with time – which we can’t!

Our what if’s become a cage, the jury and a judge, holding us prey to its sway and except we take away our eyes on that outdated swinging ball, we will remain in the land of wishful thinking and regret where nothing happens.

These innocuous words ‘what if’ aren’t my favourite two words, because it holds probabilities that tend to border on negativity.

Therefore, except the ‘what if’ connotes positivism, I’d rather drop it from my vocabulary and get on with life as it is.

I Live In This Face…personal

This is the face that I live in
She stares me in the eye
each minute of my life

I have learnt to know the woman
beneath this oval-shaped
golden-toned and warm face

Her laughter lines and crinkles around the eyes
say life is too short, don’t take yourself too seriously
make the best of it while you can.

The hidden depths of her eye’s
speak of mystery and message that lurks within
they have known the joy and the sting in life’s sharp tails.

This is the face that I live in.
I wouldn’t know how to live in another face.
for this is mine. Mine alone and IT IS beautiful!
