Growing Muscles…Writers Quote Wednesday.

Imagination is like a muscle. I found out that the more I wrote, the bigger it got. Philip José Farmer

Inside me, when I write, I stand tall. I feel a certain clench and release that I don’t experience from anything else. That’s what writing does to me. I feel an expansion of my spirit, my soul, and my mind.

As is commonly said, the art of practice brings about a perfection and though there are times that I question myself, my sanity and conviction, personal experience with scriggling and drabbling has shown me how true it is.

I find that my vivid imagination keeps getting sharper as each day goes by and it’s veering towards seeing things in 3D perspectives from the mundane details and beauty in the ordinary to the complex structure and questions that pop up inside my head. It only means that it can get better as the muscle gets fine-tuned.

Writing is certainly not an easy exercise even when we think that we have the gift of the garb and have all the structures well put together. As a matter of opinion, I find that writers are most times less assured of their writing than those who don’t write, but the passion and the loud voices that nags in one’s head won’t let you be until you’ve had your say.

Like the quote has said, and I reiterate, keep pushing the boundaries of your imaginative muscles. Explore by pushing the strictures of your boundaries and comfort. I am trying to venture outside my zone of cruise control, to a bumpy side. I bet the knowledge gained from trying new reading material and writing aspect won’t be a wasted venture.

I would rather keep pushing it, writing and shooting crabs than stopping. In the midst of the written rubbish, there’s bound to be a couple of useful material and by the time I am done with my muscle development, I might actually stand a chance of knocking Mayweather flat on his hard backside in a boxing ring with the feathered tip of my pen.

Midnight Motivations and Musings # 50…

Plan

Tomorrow is really not guaranteed any of us and that which we can do today no matter how little it is, is better done and when the following day comes, we do a bit more.

Experience has personally taught me lessons on how we rob ourselves through over-planning, procrastination and assumptions.

The future belongs only to those who live fully in their moments and take charge of each day as it comes.

We all know that the building blocks of a huge monument start with laying its base foundational stones.

So when you don’t put today’s stones in place, how exactly do you  plan to get to the tip of that pinnacle?

Like my people would say back home ‘it’s the firewood that you gather during the dry season, that you will use during the rainy season.

When you take care of today’s plans, tomorrow’s plan will take care of itself.

She knew that

She had to fight

To conquer

Or roll over

To concede

and die.

She chose

To fight

and

she

won

Perhaps…Writers quote Wednesday

perhaps

During my recent foray for freelance writing opportunities, the quote below jumped out from somewhere and glared me in the eyes.

The freelance writer is a man who is paid per piece, or per word or perhaps. Robert Benchley.

The ‘perhaps’ part got stuck in my head, drumming away at my thoughts and I knew that it’s my quote for Writer’s quote Wednesday.

I mulled over it nursing a mug of tea and toast and not willing to accept the perhaps part of these things.

I continued ruminating over it even as I later nursed this yogurt and granola beside me, still questioning the perhaps part of things.

My dull mind refused to acknowledge the fact that perhaps meant you may go for months and months as a writer, waxing brilliant and intelligent words and all, yet pauperized.

Perhaps meant, queries that may never get answered and yet you continue swallowing the bitter pill of your writers pride and keep sending the queries until your name is emblazoned on the medulla oblongata of the editor, until he/she decides to save himself a thriving headache and gives you a space to submit your write up on the different species of Cactus.

I ruminated further, taking off my rose-coloured spectacles and the truth of the matter is that we are all freelancing on our blogs, labouring lovingly over our words with the word ‘perhaps’ hanging in the balance of our thoughts.

‘Perhaps,’ in the long run, every single word would be worth the trouble and your medal as a writer, well worn with pride.

Midnight Motivations and Musings 22…

1456855202228

There are those who are experts in finding every feasible excuse under this side of the planet why something cannot be achieved, meanwhile the solution to achieving the goal is just as plain as the day and right before their nose.

They build their pessimistic mountains out of molehills and nothing ever gets done around them, due to the long chain of all the bad things that could go wrong if they ventured to take a risk.

So, they never venture. They cower in a corner and try to discourage those who dare to venture.

Life in itself is a risk. From the day you were born it is a risk, until the day you die.

It’s either you live as fully as you can or you die having never lived.

No matter how careful we are.

No matter how well we plan.

We never know what lies down the next bend on this journey of ours.

We never know what curve ball that is heading our way.

How deep we would be tossed into the cold waters

Oh how high into the winds it would flip us.

Nevertheless, in all these uncertainties

There are rudders and life buoys that helps us steer and keeps us afloat

These are the things that we must always hold on to in our life aid kit.

For day to day, we never know when we will need each of these things.

Midnight Motivation And Musings #18

1456476573169[1]

There are times when we are inadvertently hit by blows that destiny sends our way. Blows that we may never have been in a position to deflect, but one thing is that we can choose our attitude towards how the rest of our lives continues after these experiences.

Are we going to be stuck on the ‘Woe is me junction?’ Filled with bitterness and the bile of it all?

What purpose will that serve? None! Except building up the bile and angst, which is dangerous for our wellness and state of being.

Now, there are also incidents and hurts inflicted on us by others and we bear grudges the size of a mountain for them.

That’s giving someone rent free space in your head. Space that could be used for better things than dwelling on bitterness that takes us nowhere.

Forgiving them does not mean that you have forgotten the lesson learnt from the bitter experience, but it’s a way of setting yourself free.

Allowing these bitterness to dictate your life means that you will always remain in the victim mindset loop.

Cut yourself loose. Whatever it will take to get your life back, talk about it, cry about it, write about it, pray about it…..

….Set your heart free and get your life back.

Midnight Motivations And Musings #17…

1456337984239[1]

In my place, there is a proverb that says that ‘to start sleeping might be difficult, but when you do start, you begin to snore’ and another says that ‘when an old woman learns to dance to the rhythm that beats for her, she will not stop until that song is over.’

When we want to start something, there are usually a lot of hurdles set before us but if we stand our grounds and take off, the burden lightens as our stride gets firmer.

Yesterday, I wrote about distractions that pops up as we set out to achieve any goals or to do those things that needs to be done our lives, and the truth is that there will never be a perfect time for us.

There will always be distractions, so we also have to brace up and not lose focus when hit by these distractions, until we get to where we are going.

To a large degree, we have to be single-minded in our focus, otherwise, we will only find ourselves in a stagnated position or with bags full of regrets and self-recriminations.

The core strength is within us, it is only left for us to be resolute in pursuit of our purpose and at the end of it all, it will be well worth the effort.

In as much as our individual sense of success varies and is relative, there is always an enormous sense of fulfillment to be found within anyone who stuck it out and achieved their set goals.

My Writers Cold Feet…

This is my first attempt at Silver’s Writer’s Quote Wednesday and I shall dip my feet into the water with this quote that resonates with me.

‘Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom we can neither resist nor understand.’ George Orwell

I don’t know how many times that I have read this quote and I care not to count. All I know is that whenever I come across it, I nod my head vigorously.

When people are reading the written works of others, they have absolutely no idea the amount of drive, discipline, zeal, craziness and a whole myriad of emotions and actions that are invested in that work.

It is an arduous tiresome and thankless task, yet the muse in you will not let your mind keep quiet or sleep if you don’t put down those words.

Most times, writing short notes, stories, poems and essays are easier by far and more fun than writing a book.

Sometimes, I set off writing something and find myself surprised at where I ended up.

I have three manuscripts of novels at different stages sitting on my desk and staring malevolently at me and yet, some days it’s just a drag to get editing and working at it.

I have run around in circles to circumvent doing this painful task and I am running out of ideas.

One is at 95% completion, the other 70 and another at 50 percent and the characters in these books are ganging up and threatening my life with all sorts of things.

I am using the excuse that I am putting my poetry book together to stall them.

I know that there will be mutiny in the near future when the poetry book and the motivational books are done.

Maybe then, they will seize my clothes!

Midnight Motivations And Musings 12….

1455776822859[1]

Have you ever noticed how negative things propagate so fast and how bad news travels like wild fire?

That is equally how bad thoughts try to take root in our minds and multiply like Hairy panic tumbleweed of Australia.

Before you can even grasp what is going on, it’s dug in and developed a tap root that uprooting it becomes a major upheaval.

This is why we must remain consciously vigilant of the thoughts that takes up the space in our minds.

We must consistently nourish our minds carefully as we hopefully nourish our bodies, so, that there is little room for tumbleweeds to proliferate.
