Real Talk: What’s It Like Mothering A Big Family?

Photo

Every little girl’s dream to meet the person of their dreams, plan a spectacular wedding and start a family. Okay, maybe this theory is outdated now but it’s true that most women want a husband and kids. When dreams turn into reality, it can be incredibly scary. One day you’re a happily single woman with no cares in the world, and the next you’re a mom to five kids. How did that happen?!

Moms with large families hear the same questions all of the time. “God, your house must be crazy,” or “the laundry alone must be a fortune” are two classics. To put it into perspective for those that don’t know, here are the basics.

The Routine Never Stops

Have you heard of the motto “sleep, eat, rinse and repeat?” In many ways, it sums up being the head of a large family. Let’s get one thing straight – one day is never the same. However, there are core features which never go away and they keep you mega busy. Preparing meals take up a large chunk of the day, as does the school run and getting the kids to practice on time. Thankfully, the routine is merciful because you only realize you’re exhausted by the time your head hits the pillow.

Nor Does The Laughter

The incredible thing about the house being full is the noise. Sometimes, it’s a racket which never ends and it’s annoying as hell. But, usually, it’s a mixture of the things which put a smile on a mom’s face. The sound of laughter has to be a sound sent from God to keep us happy and motivated. Listening to the kids enjoying life is wonderful, and the parents get to join in too. It’s a cliché, but these moments are worth all of the bad ones and more.

Money Is Tight

With lots of hungry mouths to feed, there is a lot of pressure on the bank balance to provide. Of course, food isn’t the only expense. As the family grows, you will need everything from a new home to a bigger car. And, lenders such as Auto. Loan won’t give you a freebie. Yes, their rates are affordable but it is still another expense. As a result, money is often tight but not to the point where the mortgage won’t get paid. It’s more of a you-have-to pick-and-choose-your-moments type of thing. Oh, and saving is essential if you want a vacation or a family trip.

Holidays Are Interesting

Speaking of vacations, it would be remiss not to mention a family holiday. Like all trips with the loved ones, it’s a chaotic affair full of arguments and constant counting. Moms need eyes in the backs of their butts to make sure everyone is present and safe. Again, the scale of the vacation makes it bigger and better. It’s like your senses are dialed to ten and every little detail is funnier or more joyous.

Are you thinking about starting a family? Do you want a big one or are you going to keep it small?

What Makes Reading Such A Great Escape From Stress and Worry

Reading is one of those activities that comes with many benefits, including a range of mental health benefits. There’s nothing quite like sitting back on your bed, on the sofa, in a coffee shop – or wherever you are – with a book in your hand and your favourite drink. It’s so tranquil spending time relaxing with a good book, there is quite literally nothing like it.

There’s no doubt about it, reading is a great escape from stress and worry, but what it is that makes reading such a fantastic way to escape your problems, and what other benefits does this hobby come with? For everything that you should know, read on.

Keeps your mind active

Research has shown that people who read tend to have more active minds than people that don’t read, and people who have these brains are more than two times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s Disease in later life or struggle with mental health problems. Studies have shown that by staying mentally alert, you can significantly improve your mental health and wellness in both the long and short-term.

Transports you away from stress

Studies have shown that snuggling up with a good book can transport you away from your worries and concerns, helping to relax your mind and relieve feelings of stress. A study undertaken by the University of Sussex found that reading for just six minutes can reduce your feelings of stress by up to 68%. Of course, a substantial article, such as the one by Daniel Handlerfor instance, can also have the same effect.

You become more empathetic

By spending time reading about a large number of different people from various walks of life and circumstances than you can help you to better understand that everyone is different and realize that you are able to relate to different people in different situations to your own. By reading your mental state changes and you naturally become more empathetic, able to show more empathy to people in different situations to your own.

Strengthens your focus

Did you know that reading encourages your mind to train itself to focus better? This is because when you read, you have to retain the information that you have read, in order to continue the rest of the book. Reading requires your full focus – something that is lacking in today’s society with many people constantly multi-tasking. Simply by reading for 15 minutes per day, you can significantly improve your mental focus and ability to concentrate.

Reading helps you sleep

Then there’s the fact that reading helps you to sleep. Studies have shown that people who read regularly tend to be far better sleepers than people who don’t read. Stress can often make it difficult to fall asleep, which could indicate why reading can help to boost sleep levels as it can reduce stress levels significantly in a fairly short space of time.

Reading is an amazing hobby to have, it offers you an incredible escape from your day to day life, allowing you to reduce your feelings of stress and worry and escape into another world.

Her Butterflies…

Her first love,
he gave her a butterfly,
a beautiful, iridescent thing
stuck in a jam jar

Her second love,
he took away the butterfly,
sold it for a nickel,
and left her a fist in the face

Her third love,
he gave her many butterflies
etched in pretty coloured ink,
they lived free on her backside.

Personal story

The Girl From Yesterday…personal

Yesterday I witnessed something that disturbed me so much. At about 6pm I was driving down the highway and my car came to a screeching halt ‘cos a few meters away, right in front of me was a model-slim beautiful well-dressed black girl standing in the middle of a six-lane road.

Several cars stopped as well, ‘cos no one was sure of what was going on. She wasn’t attempting to cross the road, she was suicidal. Two brave men went and pulled her out of the middle of the road, but I’m afraid that if this young lady fails to get help, she will end up doing something painfully disastrous.

This incident messed up my brain cells a little and made me jittery. I was literally shaking with a thousand thoughts racing through my mind all at the same time. It triggered a rush of horrid feelings.

Many of you may not know this, but I have a history with a road accident and yesterday’s incident shook me, robbed me of my sleep and gave me a traumatizing nightmare.

I spent my sleepless night wondering what could have triggered such a young lady to such extent of mental anguish that she has chosen to get run over by a car?
I wondered if she has a family and where they were?
I wondered how she would get help in this forsaken place?
I spent part of my sleepless night recalling my accident and the young man I had inadvertently killed in the middle of a road several years ago.

Now I wish I had been strong enough to come down from my car to talk to this girl. To tell her that all is not lost. That there’s always hope and that she’s not alone. Maybe all she required was another listening ear. Now I am left sending silent prayers to this disturbed lady and hope that grace and mercy will abide with her. I hope that she finds succour.

I Searched…

None of us is shallow. Many have simply not learnt how to use their shovel. Jacqueline

I searched for upliftment outside
I saw bits and pieces of it
I saw greedy people grabbing
and holding on to more than they needed

I searched for upliftment within
I saw a bottomless portion
I saw gifts that keep giving
that can be shared with everyone else.

Positive Affirmation Challenge

What About You? Affirmation Challenge Day 45

I am who I am for a beautiful reason. I am not a mistake. My experiences: the good, the bad and the downright ugly all culminate to shape me into this unique and awesome human made in God’s image.

Every single one of us has had varied experiences that have a significant effect on who we are. The most important aspect of any experience is not so much in the experience itself but in the meaning that we assign to these experiences. What stories do we inadvertently tell ourselves based off these experiences? These underlined internal stories shape us, shape our future decisions and how we interact with others.

Some allow their ugly experiences to rule over how they perceive themselves for the rest of their lives. A lot of times this internal perception reads ‘I am not good enough,’ I’m not beautiful enough, I’m less than.’  This is a huge disservice to yourself. You should never forget that one or two sorry experiences don’t detract from the beautiful person that you are.

We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it – and stop there; lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove-lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove-lid again – and that is well; but also she will never sit down on a cold one anymore. ~Mark Twain

Art

Art In The House…

The children have been keeping themselves gainfully employed this summer holiday drawing, painting and sketching. Right now art materials are simply not cheap for me, but it’s cheaper than sending them to a Summer camp and it’s worth every penny that I spend watching them work on their skills.

Thoughts For Tuesday…

Sometimes we expend too much time and energy learning the rules that we forget to play the game. Most times, you are better off throwing away the rule book and wading in heads on. You’ll figure it out.

Positive Affirmation Challenge

What About You? Affirmation Challenge Day 44

I am filled with enthusiasm. Thoughts of continuous personal development, growth and success make my spirit hum with excitement and joy.

I have some good news for you. No matter where you are in your career, or in your life, there’s always a chance to start over. Your age is not an excuse and should not be used as a reason to stop you from going after what you want. It is never ever too late to achieve those dreams.

Stay in relentless pursuit of your dreams. Keep working to make them a reality. Don’t allow pessimism and negative self-talk override your possibilities. Remember that time is nothing more than time. Time has no power to determine whether your dreams are possible or not. You, however, have all the power you need to make them come true.

The day I stop chasing my dreams is the day that I die. As I grow older, I realize that I have no plans to stop dreaming and to become everything that I envisaged.

These Beautiful Shared Thoughts Below Make Me Smile:

Rotimi Elijah: Hmm…. Insightful and thoughtful. God is always there for us all.

DancingPalmTrees: I totally agree with you 100%. There are many days when all I can afford to eat are a bagel and some ramen noodles but something is better than nothing therefore I am blessed.

Eugenia: I’ve had my struggles through life but somehow, I’ve always managed to make ends meet. Though I am not very religious, I’ve always felt God’s presence. I feel believing is the first step toward surviving.

PamelaS.Canepa. Writing and Living: Beautiful! A most memorable Bible quote that I hold onto, especially in times of anxiety or worry, is “Be still and know that I am God.” How else could we quiet the mind, and mine certainly needs quieting most days!

DancingPalmTrees: I digress but just want to share this 11 year old Da Vinci of Nigeria.

What About You? Positive Affirmation Day 43

I am content. I may not have all that I want in life right now, but the wonderful thing is that each day my needs are met. For this, I am grateful.

This year has been exceptionally challenging and financially tough on my family. There are days that I simply wonder how to make the ends meet and as a human I do feel grumpy about it when the mood sets in, but the interesting thing is that once I begin to consciously breathe and silently pray about ‘these things’ the cloud of gloom lifts.

The most amazing thing is that at the end of each day, my families basic needs are met in one way or the other. I truly believe in miracles. There are days that God has used total strangers to bless me. Saying that I’m content does not in anyway remove the fact that we’re struggling at the moment, but totally enhances the peaceful ease of mind that ‘He has me and mine covered.’
