Bursted!…

Image result for burst balloon

His ego was so huge,
that everyone thought it was spectacular;
no one knew that it was just a bubbly, jellied balloon,
that beneath the gigantic elastic words,
lay a fragile, small mind.

They helped him to blow it up and massaged it,
it grew and grew until the center could no longer hold,
and the gigantic ego bubble burst,
all the fragility was set amok,
to open-mouthed looks of shock.

When The Cock Crows At Dawn…

PicsArt_08-31-09.18.06[1]

Phew! We are halfway there before the first weekend since school resumed. Thanks to the alarm clock we have been able to crawl reluctantly out of bed again, even before the rooster crows – not that I have heard or seen any rooster in this concrete jungle that I live in; except on a plate – but this hardwired brain of this African child still remembers the cocks crow at dawn back in my fathers’ house.

I recall those days when we would wake up early, sweep the house with the broom made from palm fronds and bent to the waist, after which you dusted the furniture and ran several errands for my mother as she prepared the meal before you could get ready to go to school.

Things haven’t changed so much except the broom sweeping part – thank God for vacuum cleaners – I still wake up early to do the necessaries before we set off for the days business of school, work, after school etc.

It’s ironical that when I was back in my parents home, I thought that when I got married and had my kids, I would become what we refer to back home as ‘Thick Madam,’ who would roll around in bed and rise like an indolent Cleopatra with a retinue of handmaiden’s waiting to rub cocoa butter on my feet 😉

Well, the opposite of Thick Madam is the case. I hop out of bed, reluctantly resisting tossing the alarm clock out of the window whilst I hustle the children to get ready like a Sergeant Major as I run a mental list in my head of all that needs to be attended to for the day.

Today as I watched my trio file out after the runaround of getting ready, I acknowledge once again the beauty of having these blessed children. My house might be a bit messy most of the time but I wouldn’t have it differently. I appreciate the daily shebangs as these young souls grow, for I know that one day in the near future they will fly my coop, no longer littering the counter with breadcrumbs, dumping their stuff where it shouldn’t be and warming the house with their noise.

Who knows maybe in the near future, my house would look like the pages of an interior decor catalogue and I just might get to become a ‘Thick Madam,’ after all, but for now, it’s all wonderful and I am thankful to be like a Sergeant Major rising when the cock crows at dawn.

Rononvan's Weekly Haiku Challenge

Rhyme for no reason – Ronovan writes weekly haiku challenge.

I chose to have a little fun with the prompt ‘Rhyme & Reason,’ that Ronovan gave us for this week’s haiku. We need no reason to make a rhyme and sometimes I don’t follow any rules of poetry and write a free flow.

A man from Thyme loved to rhyme
during Summer season, for unknown reasons.
He played the pipe, he hummed and mimed,
he danced a jig and earned some dimes.

Sometimes I make some silly rhymes
for absolutely no real reason,
just for fun and a smile.

Sometimes I write deep, emotive rhymes
to express my inner thoughts
and expose how my mind reasons.

Short Stories

Chunky monkey…

Angelas‘ brisk steps slowed down to shorter strides as she tussled with her mind to stay focused and not to give in to the nudging temptation, but by the time she had walked a few more yards, her taste buds desire gave up on the battle with her mind and she quickly retraced her steps back to funky munky, promising herself all the way that after the treat she would resist future temptations.

Savouring the burst of sweetness that hit her senses, she closed her eyes in delighted appreciation of each sip of the trademark chocolate combo drink and chewy chunks of chunky monkey.

Satisfied with her quick, sneaky indulgence, she silently chastised herself for not sticking to the plan and got up to leave, only for the door to open and Tim her diet partner and husband walked in.

They both stared at each other in chagrin and burst out laughing sheepishly.

My learning curves…personal

Spanish_2[1]

At each point in my life, I have found myself spending it on the acquisition of knowledge or a certain skill.

Some were reluctantly assimilated when my parents threw me inside pre-school in my diapers and then primary school for formal education when I would probably have preferred to stay home and play in the red-coloured sandy area of my childhood haunts.

Now I thank them for gritting their teeth as painful as it might have been and not paying heed to my wheedling cry to escape learning my alphabets.

Imbibing knowledge is second nature to man. Learning is both formal and informally through social interactions and in my opinion, learning for me is ad infinitum.

You are never too old to learn new stuff and yours truly here has a lengthy quest to pursue, but now I’m doing my pursuits with some pragmatic sense and not running after every learning fad that catches my fancy like my younger days.

Ruling out the different fancy classes my mother enrolled me in, in a bid to make a lady out of her formerly gangly daughter; piano classes, dressmaking, crocheting, knitting, music lessons – not that I could carry a good tune or play the violin but I managed to play the flute decently – to baking, cooking and whatever was in vogue, thankfully we didn’t have ballet back in my town otherwise I probably would have been made to stand on my toes and possibly break them in the process, I’ve pursued quite some learning routes myself.

Some of them turned out successful and some were almost a disaster for me and the tutor.

I’m bilingual. After spending close to five years learning French, I fancied myself becoming a Polyglot so I embarked on learning German and Spanish.

I doubt if I ever crossed the threshold of ‘Guten Morgen‘ to the German teacher’s dismay and the dismay of my pocket. I think my tongue was not thick enough for the language and it didn’t quite sound as romantic as the nasal French which seemed to suit my tongue far better.

My Spanish has been sporadic in learning but I managed to progress beyond ‘Cómo estás to ‘me llamo Jacqueline‘ and at least I had the good sense not to spend too much just in case the desire died a quick death.

I fancied finding myself becoming a Taekwondo Maestro or is it Maestra, and I can’t tell you it ended well.

I nearly succeeded in killing the instructor and myself and that put paid to such ambition. I nursed my painful thighs for weeks and I guess he nursed some part of his bruised parts that was inadvertently caught in my not too stellar attempts.

I’m sure he was glad when I didn’t renew the fees for another session.

Not that I’ve given up hope on being nimble and flipping in the air in a chopstick, but I’m thinking that yoga is safer for now – at least I can get to sneak in a snooze on the mat and at least use a DVD and not have to spend scarce funds for now.

However, I still have some learning ideas that I’m toying with…

After all, learning is a continuous process. It’s ad infinitum

Singing for our supper: I’ll love to place my feet on these paths of the Apollo Walk of Fame. Beautiful scene. Maybe putting my feet on the mark of James Brown will earn me dexterous dancing toes 😉

Odd-ball: Some vintage bikes. Bet they are worth a packet.

Our Southern mothers: Ha! The good old precious times. I truly enjoyed this post though I’m not a Southern girl, but I could play the scenes in my head. Check it out.

Strolling through Paris: Paris de mon cœur – Paris of my heart, a refreshing visit to the ‘bon quartier‘ is long overdue. Beautiful post that makes me reminisce 🙂

Defective medium: Every medium in the life of man is defective because man by nature is not flawless. As the Bible would say “the heart of man is desperately wicked” this poem says a lot.

Tuesday chatter: a breezy chat with my dear Eugenia is always so cheering and worthwhile 🙂
