I know you have to make a buck but please don’t take me for a ride!

I blistered the taxi drivers ears! Some Dubai taxi drivers like to rip off their passengers because they think that they are smart and that everyone who looks different is a tourist. I gained sufficient experience of their dodgy antics during my early months of living here and because the black community around my area is thin, there’s high tendency of people assuming that I’m a tourist.

My car was taken for service and I had to be somewhere in a hurry. I didn’t want to take the train and stop at all the stations and possibly get to my destination hot and late. I hate going late for appointments.

I also didn’t feel like joining the bus and having a leisure ride through town.

I knew where I was going and what it would cost me to get there give and take the traffic flow. I’ve been there, many times over.

So, I took a taxi and the driver decided to take me on an Israelites journey through the wilderness and he meandered through all the nooks and crannies and the longest route available in town so that his meter would run as high as possible.

I wasn’t in the mood for a scenic view of the town and had not made such a request – no thank you! My interest wasn’t in getting to know about the best Indian restaurant around or about the cheaper malls that are having sales.

Yes, I enjoy Bollywood movies now and again, but I didn’t want to talk about it with you. That I’m a black woman alone doesn’t mean that I’m out looking for a good time.

All I wanted was to compose my marketing thoughts together and to get to my appointment on time.

Maybe the fact that I told him to concentrate on his driving made him decide to run off with me :/

Now and again my charitable side overlooks a dirham here and there and I leave some change for them ‘cos I know that it’s a struggle for them as well, but what I can’t stand is the smart Alec nonsense some of them come up with and the sudden convenient pretense not to understand English well enough. That’s just annoying!

I blistered his ears and told him that next time he pulls such nonsensical stunt he just might meet the wrong passenger who would report him to RTA (Road Transport Authority).

I felt ripped off. Thankfully after a rigmarole that cost me almost double the normal fare, I got to my meeting early enough.

Midnight motivation and musings

Midnight Motivations and Musings 109…

picsart_09-18-03-24-171

The niggling doubts that hound our efforts are the enemy of our progress and once undue attention is paid to such doubts, fear sets in.

It’s natural to question and think through a project that you want to embark on, but our reasoning and decisions have to be taken from a logical standpoint.

Like my people would say ‘not everything that crawls on its belly is a snake,’ in other words, not every doubt that comes up is worth the time of the day. Keeping focused may be difficult but it’s worth the while to keep one’s eyes on the objectives.

Over the past few months, I’ve had struggles, but I’ve refused to let these struggles define nor stop me and each day, the burden of doubt reduces.

Say Hello To The Beautiful, Smart Professor Kathy Garland.

This space has been a flourishing opportunity to meet with people from all walks of life and I find inspiration from each person whom I’ve interacted with.

They help me to grow in the mind and to push my self-progress envelope. My guest for today is Asst. Professor Kathy Garland.

Thank you, Kathy, for sharing bits about you with us. On the side, I smiled when I saw your book cover for ‘The Unhappy Wife’ which shows similar taste to mine ‘Out of the silent breath’ 🙂

Let’s get to know a bit about you.

Displaying kgarland.jpg

Hi, everyone! My name is Katherin Garland, but I write under the name K E Garland. I’ve taught high school English for ten years and post-secondary courses for fifteen years.

My most recent positions are at places like Georgia College and Florida State University. I’m currently an assistant professor teaching education courses at a community college in Florida while focusing on a writing career.

There are two concepts I live by:

1. Anything that you can think of can be actualized, and

2. What’s for you is for you and will always be revealed if you’re aligned with your passion and purpose.

Why blog?

I began my blog when I wrote my first book, Kwoted. Like many authors, my editor suggested a platform was necessary. At first, my blog was just a place for me to house my quotes and hopefully sell a few books.

After a month, I realized that having a blog is about more than just creating a promotional space; it’s a community.

I was in awe of how many bloggers are here, writing about any and everything. Then, discouragement set in. I thought, Man, if there are so many people already here, then my voice might get lost.

It’s only after I participated in a few Blogging U classes, right here on WordPress that I began to get the gist of the blogosphere. Blogging really is about writing and sharing whatever your little heart desires while maintaining whatever you see as your niche.

After Blogging 101 and 201, I fine-tuned my purpose towards a more inspirational blog that includes authenticity through real stories and personal photography.

My blog is a place where people can come have a conversation about what they read and see.

I write about myself a lot, but the posts are not really about me, but rather some overarching theme. For example, Why I Refuse to Judge Any Mother is the first post I shared publicly. It includes feelings I’d harboured about my own mother, but it’s more focused on releasing judgment for those we call mom.

What’s your typical day like?

I’m not sure that I have a “typical” day and my Gemini self, likes it that way. However, my days are always structured. On any given day, you can find me doing the following:

Exercising: Five times a week, I either join a yoga class, run/walk a couple of miles or take a walk with my husband, Dwight.

Displaying kgarland_and_dwight.JPG

Meditating: Everyday I meditate on my balcony. If I’m pressed for time, then I take 5-10 minutes to get centred and focus on my breath. If I have more time, then meditations last at least 20 minutes. Sometimes, I do a guided meditation with Deepak and Oprah; they offer a 21-day free one every now and then.

Writing: My daily writing schedule consists of blog drafts, new projects (e.g., self-published books), contests, or publications. It depends on what I’ve decided for the day, but I make sure I write something, even if no one else will see it.

One month I decided to write each day and ended up writing an entire memoir. It’s saved somewhere safe until I feel the urge to publish it.

Teaching: Every semester, I teach five classes. Three of them are online, so that makes structuring the day a little easier for me.

The other two require a one and two-hour drive. On those days, I hop in my Honda Fit, turn on my Kanye West playlist and make my way towards educating future teachers.

Wifing/Mothering: As of September 21st, I will have been married 20 years. My husband and I know one another very well. Sometimes we spend massive amounts of time together, and other times, he’s watching Netflix, while I’m writing.

The same goes for my teenage daughters. Sometimes we hang out at the beach or the movies, and other times they’re closed up in their rooms on Snapchat, while I’m writing. However, every Sunday we eat together at 7:00 P.M. My youngest daughter came up with the idea ten years ago and we’ve kept it up ever since.Displaying kgarland_and_girls.JPG

For the past decade, my dog Rascal hung out with me during each of these activities. Unfortunately, I had to euthanize him in March. My post, simply titled, Rascal describes how difficult it was for me to release my beloved.Displaying rascal.jpg

As I continued to read advice from people like, Janice Wald, some posts were centred on offering advice and admiration for the blogging community. According to the stats, Three Reasons the Blogging Community is Better than Social Media is the one the WordPress community appreciated the most.

So, what plans do you have in the offing?

Right now, I’m doing a lot of marketing for my recently published book, The Unhappy Wife. It’s interesting because now that I have a platform, I don’t want to ruin my blogging relationships because I’m talking about my book all the time. You know? I don’t want to be that blogger.The Unhappy Wife by [Garland, KE]

There’s definitely a balance that I’m still in the process of figuring out. Other than my book, I’m maintaining inspirational posts based on photography and narratives. One of my goals is to connect with readers through my own raw and shared emotions. I always want readers to leave inspired to do something a little different or what I like to call #RethinkYourRhetoric. That’s what you can count on when you visit my blog, whether I’m marketing a book, or not.

A Click A Day

BLOOM in Your Season – A Click A Day.

I walked past these flowers two days ago,

I noticed the unfurling buds,

I took a photo and went on my way.

picsart_09-17-09-06-011

I walked past the same flowers yesterday,

I saw that they had bloomed prettily,

I took another photo and went on my way.

picsart_09-17-09-04-261

I went on my way with a thought about these simple blooms.

I recalled the phrase "bloom where you are planted."

It didn't matter how scorching the sun has been;

it didn't matter how dry the season is in the desert;

the plant didn't have to go to the Tropics to try and grow;

it stood where it was planted and brought forth its beauty!

What matters is that as long as you push the boundaries of comfort where you are,

In your time and in due season, you'll bloom wherever you are.

Shalom!

Stream of Consciousness Saturday.

Cracking the Code – Streams of Consciousness Saturday.

Establishing anything worthwhile can sometimes be a painstaking and frustrating journey.

Having estimated that I would have my self-hosted second blog up and running – and possibly earning extra bucks by now, I still find myself tinkering and blistering the ears of endless widgets and my laptop late into the nights and waking up bleary eyed.socsbadge2016-17

Having a busy daily schedule trying to be an esteemed mother, wife, entrepreneur/worker, serial blogger, writer et al is a demanding routine, that to add the building of a new site on your own where you’ve got to fit in your plug-ins, write the shortcodes, figure out endless links and stuff is enough to deplete Estrogens and give one a sprout full of gray hairs, but the glaring truth is that since I want to eat omelets I’ve got to crack these eggs – no pun intended 😉

Anyhow, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel – it’s doable, so let me get on with my toolbox and cracking the codes 🙂

I wondered where I was going to fit in the prompt ‘est’ in today’s SoCS, but it seems that my struggle over the past few weeks has become useful in a funny way.

Have a great weekend.

The Daily Post

Bursted!…

Image result for burst balloon

His ego was so huge,
that everyone thought it was spectacular;
no one knew that it was just a bubbly, jellied balloon,
that beneath the gigantic elastic words,
lay a fragile, small mind.

They helped him to blow it up and massaged it,
it grew and grew until the center could no longer hold,
and the gigantic ego bubble burst,
all the fragility was set amok,
to open-mouthed looks of shock.

If you never follow your dreams and your calling, you are always going to feel confined to a small space, stuck! Hide and Seek, Here and Now…

 picsart_09-16-10-09-461
Here and now, as I sit on the parks bench soaking up the air,
watching the children play hide and seek with Griffin,
the darling old dog of a good neighbour.
Griffin is 14 years old, that’s really old in dog years;
he’s no longer fast and pants quite heavily,
but he still loves a good rub and enjoys playing hide and seek,
as he trudges slowly on his Cocker-Spaniel legs.

picsart_09-16-10-11-231

Here and now a bazillion thoughts race through my mind
like flitting fireflies, resting on this and floating to that,
I craft plans with paper and pen;
some thoughts etched in ink,
and some are left to the mind.
…make sandwich of tuna and eggs on a bed of lettuce,
…call mother and enjoy a good laugh with baby sister;
…go with the boys to get a haircut later,
…write a post to publish before I go (this is the post);
…tinker with a few widgets on my upcoming blog.

picsart_09-16-10-12-231

Here and now, I feel at ease yet restless…
I have learnt to live day by day and enjoy the moments,
though sometimes my imagination drifts beyond the present.
I try not to query the future for it’s not guaranteed to anyone.
I have learnt that all I truly have is here and now,
and I must make the best of it as much as I can.
