I’m Judging Your Feet…

The hurried albeit elegantly measured click-clack across the room drew eyes’ to ‘her’ feet clad in beautiful, sexy orange coloured sling-backs before they rose to her face. In a bid to write a shoe post I have spent several days unwittingly and unabashedly peeking at people’s feet and hers set the stream of thought flowing.  I  took a second look and saw the little designer sign which subtly announced the expensive brand. In the same flow of thinking, I couldn’t help but wonder how many shoes I could buy for the price of that one.

A quick analysis of her appearance spoke of a smart, fashion conscious, go-for-it, dry wit, confident and ‘maybe’ fun-loving lady. When we look at people, we do a quick summation and then categorize them by their looks; what they wear, either from top to bottom or from bottom to top. We all do this subconsciously.

This silent assessment decides our expectations of a person and it takes the maturity of the mind to know that the outward packaging never truly depicts the inner package even if the outward appearance might give off tell-tale signs about someone. In many instances, especially in recent times, I’ve met expensively dressed people who were simply arrogant airheads, and I’ve also had the most exciting, thought-provoking encounters from the least expected quarters.

Back to those shoes. I love shoes. Flats, heels, boots, mules, sandals, ballet, platforms, wedges, stilettos, and all the styles in-between, I love them and I know most women do. Some women actually have shoe addiction that if shoes could be banked, they would fetch a fortune with their collection. As we grow older some of us we are wise enough to stop squeezing our feet into shoes that pinch and to buy sensible ones. My days of running in nail thin heels are now fast fading and rather than risk falling off a pair of flimsy spindly heels and breaking my neck, I invest my bucks on comfortable shoes that can walk the mile.

Without any doubt, your shoes complement your dressing ‘cos they have a way of accentuating your personality and mood. In my own case, I love vibrant colours and I am not hesitant to wear a coloured pair of shoes.   Red says I’m feeling girly and flirty. My black pumps are business mode activated and the ballet flats indicate that I want to feel comfortable ‘cos it’s a long day ahead. The leopard print loafers and blue Nike’s also say it’s adventure day…anything can happen. My deep blue heels make me feel like royalty…

I am yet to own expensive pairs of Louboutin’s, Manolo’s or Jimmy Choo’s because I simply can’t afford them and even when I have the funds, I honestly doubt that I would want to spend such ginormous amount of money on a pair of shoes that I can only wear for a limited amount of time.

Call me cheap and cheerful, baby you just might be right. I believe in value for my hard-earned money. I believe in bargains and I happily hunt for them. I have a pair of black mules and this dog-eared faithful has served me way beyond the princely sum of $60 spent on purchasing it. I hope you are not judging me by my shoes ‘cos right now, my feet are bare as I earth them on the cool marble floor whilst tapping away on my laptop.

With Bells on Her Toes…fashion is timeless

I find pleasure in visiting the souks because it feeds my literal interest in people watching as well as window shopping at 0% cost which is a major social skill to acquire. For obvious reasons fashion jewelry automatically makes me think of this nursery rhyme:

Ride a white horse

to Banbury cross

to see a white lady

upon a white horse

with rings on her fingers

and bells on her toes

she shall have music

Three weeks ago some sister friends visited from Nigeria and a visit to Dubai is not complete without going to the gold souk to look at shimmery, jaw-dropping trinkets.

One of them is a fashion entrepreneur who came to restock her merchandise for sale back home and from what I know, the current recession of Nigerian economy hasn’t stopped our women from looking good. They’ve found ways to cheaper alternatives from expensive trinkets as well as fashionable items like sunglasses, bags, wrist watches  all at wholesale prices.

So, I got to take them to the Souk and was their privileged escort for the price of good old-fashioned catching up, a bit of gossip, lots of laughter and street food 🙂

I live in a mega city where it’s not strange to see women dressed in eye-popping finery. Fancy trinkets are all over the place and can become yours at the drop of your plastic. You can go for the high-end fashion to the low-end, it’s your choice.

However, I don’t believe that one should rob the bank in order to own lovely pieces and look good – not all trinkets that glitter is gold. Like every other woman, I love to look chic and trendy. Looking good makes you feel good and you can do so in a thrifty way.

There are smart and efficient ways to acquire cheerful fashionable pieces through wholesale enterprises like wholesale jewelry China.

Tips to consider when purchasing wholesale jewelry

What’s the market cost? Compare prices with parallel vendors

Do you qualify for wholesale purchase? There are online suppliers that will sell single pieces, many overseas vendors sell at wholesale prices.

Negotiate prices, it’s an open market

Don’t be afraid to contact the seller to ask questions for more clarity.

Think of your payment mode – PayPal, Credit/Debit card

Compare shipping, return policies, customer ratings, and feedback comments.

Can your goods be insured?

Educate yourself on how jewelry is made and enjoy the learning.

So, do let me know when you are coming over, I’ll be looking forward to the cup of coffee, some old-fashioned conversation, and window shopping.

To polish with love….

Nail Polish, grooming, gifts, little treats

My fingernails have been au naturel for many years now for expediency sake.

I love nail polish but with hands in and out of water cooking for my family daily, the polish chips pretty quickly and I’d rather wear my nails bare than bearing tacky looking fingertips.

However, my toenails are always glammed up in a cheerful, bright colour just like this new bottle dear hubby bought for me. Little treats make this girl happy 😗

Movement of the people – Every day beautiful people 77

“Take action! An inch of movement will bring you closer to your goals than a mile of intention.” Dr. Steve Maraboli

“In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.” Deepak Chopra

“The more I traveled, the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” Shirley Maclaine

I can’t say it enough, there’s nothing as interesting as observing people. You wonder who they are, where they are going, what’s their story etc.

In a microcosm such as the airport, the train, the buses, the malls, anywhere you can find a throng of people, it’s quite informative what you learn about someone just by looking.

Are they fussy, tantrum throwers, are the fidgety, composed, smiling, frowning?…. It’s a free movie!

Yikes! Scalping! – Every day beautiful people 76

“Sometimes, what we pay for looking good is not just paper currency but the price of discomfort.” Jacqueline Oby-Ikocha

I literally shuddered and ouched severally in my head as I watched this interesting scalp grooming.

It wasn’t the usual hair clipper that I see men use these days but a rather effective and shudder inducing switch blade that was pretty sharp and ran smoothly in the hands of the barber or is it hair stylist that the men call it? Not sure.

I doubt if I will be brave enough to submit myself for this.

I absolutely love this book of poems. My favorites are “Love Rations” (for those who love to give the silent treatment) and “Beggars Supper” (which definitely pulls at the heart strings). Two thumbs up!!

The words…Every day beautiful people # 73

“If you’re making mistakes, it means you are out there doing something.” Neil Gaiman

Man_wearing_quote_shirt[1]

The words on his T-shirt caught my eyes. It’s a familiar quote which says:

“No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still ahead of everyone who isn’t trying.” Tony Robbins

The key word is to keep moving even it if it’s in snail progress.

It was just interesting to watch the smile and gleam in the eyes of these gentlemen as they admired the ritzy, gleaming red, little ride.

I actually think this red ride is more my thing than theirs. I can see myself in a bigger version to accommodate my ampleness, with the roof down, my scarf and locks flying in the air as I nip about town 😉

Well, let’s keep that thought in my mind’s eye for now.

From the very first poem, “Dreams,” this book captivates with passionate and perceptive words. Jacqueline Oby-Ikocha captures a broad expanse of the human experience in this book of richly layered poems.
