Camel Craziness: Al Marmoom Heritage – Echoes of My Neighbourhood

I’ve not seen such number of Camels gathered in one place all my life. Certain things are better witnessed to appreciate them and the Dromedary (Arabian) Camel racing at the just concluded Al Marmoom Heritage Festival is one of those things.

The Festival celebrates a most valued beast of burden (in these parts) with more than a week of thrilling camel races and cultural exhibitions.

We managed to attend on one of the days and the excitement of spectators was simply contagious. Nothing prepared me for the prospect of seeing fleets and fleets of gangly dromedaries in full flight carrying their robotic jockeys on their humps while their robot handlers/trainers raced along beside them in their 4 x 4 SUV’s.

The camels’ hail from all across the Middle East. They are the stars of the show and they compete in various heats during the day, over a 12-day period. Believe me, it’s an exhilarating one-of-a-kind camel-crazy jamboree!

I even got a generous offer of 50 camels as dowry for my old hands from an interesting fellow with tobacco stained teeth. Quite an experience ๐Ÿ˜‰

Date Juice – Easy, Peasy Recipe

Dates

Dates are not only delicious, they are filled with healthy surprises. Abundant in the UAE, Egypt and parts of the Persian Gulf Region/Middle East, this highly nutritious, cholesterol-free fruit has so many varieties that are endowed with nature’s bounty of providing you with various health benefits, though it’s downside maybe it’s richness in sugar for diabetic patients.

The fructose that it contains is far better than the refined sugar that we consume these days and I am exploring using date syrup as my go to sweetener instead of sugar.

A quick look at the health benefits:

Contains vitamins like B1, B2, B3, B5, A1 and C

  1. Boosts heart health.
  2. Anti-Inflammatory properties
  3. Reduced Blood Pressure
  4. Promotes Digestive Health, Relieving Constipation
  5. Boosts Brain Health
  6. Bone Health and Strength
  7. Dietary supplement for anaemic people – increases energy
  8. Increases sexual stamina – when soaked overnight in goat milk and consumed the next morning.
  9. Helps reduction of night blindness
  10. A quick remedy for alcoholic intoxication.
  11. Great for hair and skin.

How to make date juice:

Contents: Water, Dates, Vanilla essence or lemon juice, (Almonds and ground Cardamon are optional).

Note that the quantity of dates that you use depends on how many people you are serving, but for 2 refreshing glasses, a handful of dates will suffice.

  1. Remove the seeds and soak a handful of dates in warm water for 3o mins to 1 hour to soften.
  2. Once the dates have soaked, drain the water then add the dates, One and aย half cup of water, lemon juice or vanilla into the container of aย high-speed blender and blend for 60 seconds or until smooth.
  3. If desired, you can add ground cardamom or almonds into the mix and blend.
  4. Serve slightly chilled.
  5. Enjoy and satisfy your sweet tooth ๐Ÿ˜‰

City Walk – Echoes of my neighbourhood 27

On Thursdayโ€™s, I share pictures about โ€˜Echos of my Neighbourhood.

I would like to invite you to participate. The challenge is quite simple and you can find out more about it through this link.

The sweltering heat and blinding Sun keeps one from venturing out much during the day right now, but the great thing is that Dubai’s lifestyle is a bit different in that the city really comes aliveย at nights till the wee hours of the morning when the weather is just a tad cooler.

There’s living to be done and being cooped up indoors inside air-conditioned facilities doesn’t cut it always. I took a walk around City walk with the children, took them to Hub Zero to play a bit and having an ice-cream to cool off certainly helps ๐Ÿ˜‰

City walk houses lots of hauteย couture boutiques, a promenade, cinema, restaurants, indoor theme games and lots more. A lovely place with quiet spots where you can sit, enjoy the ambience and watch passersby.

Seeing the Berlin wall expose through Lady Lee’s eyes is an education. How much do you know about this divisive structure of the past and how the citizens lived through such perilous times? This is worth a visit. Pamela took us to downtown Jacksonville, Florida with its budding art scene. This is just my kind of place to wander happily ๐Ÿ™‚

So, when do we get to visit you? Now, donโ€™t be shy and invite us over๐Ÿ˜‰

Sun[1]

You are certainly moving with the times Ronovan by giving us a prompt ‘Dazzle & Sky’ that aptly matches the blazing Sun that comes out so early these days and the heat is not mild by any means. The photo I used for the prompt was taken this morning around 5.00 a.m. when I woke up.

Recently, as early as 4:30 a.m.

the Sun rises, rays dazzle and glow

in the Middle-Eastern sky.

ย ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž

It’s brilliance warms you up

if you can catch an early walk

under the dazzling clear sky

โ™จโ™จ

When you miss the hour

that the Sun gently embraces the sky

you’ll face dazzling, scorching heat.

Can you tell a story from the picture?

Well, here’s my own narration. I enjoy having such little fun ๐Ÿ™‚

The imagined conversation. Watch their hand movement:

1st photo – Man in white thobe:Habib, you told me to go there and I did!

2nd photo – I saw nothing.

3rd photo – you misled me, why?

1st photo – Man in shorts kept quiet

2nd photo – still quiet but smiling.

3rd photo – my friend, I didn’t mislead you. I have no idea what happened there.

So, what do you see?

P.S: You can join our online party this weekend. Itโ€™s always a good time:-)

The weather has heated up quite a bit, but these men are able to find some repose on their push carts. The heat actually tends to make one feel a bit lethargic.

I have to say I’m in awe and spellbound by her poetry. She is amazing at describing love and life in her poems. She creates such beautiful images with her words. Truly, she is a talented writer and I’m so excited to have her poetry book and to continue reading through it.

A Season and Friends like this…

Happy[1]

I love the blooming flowers and the cheery mood on people’s faces. There’s something very pretty about this season, even if we are all sneezing in my house at this point in time.

I appreciate that it’s not yet baking hot which is a condition synonymous to the Middle East and as such, I am still taking advantage of the airiness of the outdoors and spending as much time as I can before it all changes.

I am quite thankful for the connections that I have made in this space.

Some bloggers have extended their hands of fellowship way beyond my expectations this past week in their show of kindness to me.

To you dear Dehan Taylor and Tasha , I say thank you.

Both of you might not see what you’ve done as much, but it means a lot to me.

I sincerely appreciate your care and can only leave this word of blessing for you, ‘as you show love to those around you, you pave way to your own greatness.

I hope that you are thankful for something today.ย You can join Collineโ€™sย  or Maria Jansson gratitude challenge platforms.
