It is natural to suffer trepidation and even fear when we are experiencing dark moments in our lives. These challenges could be daunting to such an extent that we stall and lose sight of how far we’ve come and the focus on where we are heading to.

When we go through disconcerting moments, we may actually get to our brightest moments and experience far more growth than we anticipated because our deepest struggles have a way of refining us and making room for enlightenment and growth.

The important thing is to keep picking yourself up and keep moving forward no matter how many times you stumble. You will look back and be amazed at how far you came and you’ll leave your situation behind feeling far more fulfilled.

Sometimes, life pushes us through these difficulties so that we don’t become blasé, life keeps us dreaming and reaching for more.

There comes a time when the ‘use by date’ of some people in our lives expires and we have to let them go. Those who can’t stand to see your progress, whose main roles as the Negative Nancy’s and Ned’s  is to discourage and remind you of a hurtful past,  as a way to keep  you pegged under their thumbs and forever cloaked in self-doubt.

These people exercise mind control over you and subconsciously, you are allowing them to manipulate your life one way or the other – when you have to hope for moral support that is never forthcoming, hide your true desires, or reduce yourself before them, in order to accommodate their scoffing disbelief, peevishness and other symptoms that they tend to exhibit, it’s time to put them to pasture and walk away. Not every friendship is built to last and have a fairytale forever ending.

Life is a continuum and as much as we don’t like our comfort being disturbed the truth is that after a while your comfort zone becomes stale, discomforting and claustrophobic.

In order to keep growing, we have to consistently stretch the limbs of our imagination. The strength of our creativity, our physical and spiritual growth is highly dependent on how we dare ourselves to grow from the familiar to unfamiliar. Don’t settle! Don’t stagnate. Keep pushing for higher grounds. The harder you push, the easier it becomes.

This analogy can be likened to a crab that periodically molts and sheds its exoskeleton which would leave it vulnerable and fragile for some time while it continues to grow into its new shell and then molts again when it’s inelastic shell becomes too tight.

Be that crab.

The niggling doubts that hound our efforts are the enemy of our progress and once undue attention is paid to such doubts, fear sets in.

It’s natural to question and think through a project that you want to embark on, but our reasoning and decisions have to be taken from a logical standpoint.

Like my people would say ‘not everything that crawls on its belly is a snake,’ in other words, not every doubt that comes up is worth the time of the day. Keeping focused may be difficult but it’s worth the while to keep one’s eyes on the objectives.

Over the past few months, I’ve had struggles, but I’ve refused to let these struggles define nor stop me and each day, the burden of doubt reduces.

When we sit idle and make redundant wishes, hoping that X, Y, and Z will happen to bring about the changes that we seek, we are possibly wasting time and valuable opportunities. A wishful thought can only come to fruition with action.

If you don’t like where you are planted, then consider shifting around for a better spot.

If you don’t like how your life story reads, turn another page and start a new chapter.

If you don’t like certain things about your community, what are you doing to make a difference, no matter how small?

Every step taken brings you closer to your hope as long as you are taking that step.

Change is difficult to embrace most times because of the fear of the unknown and this fear leaves us clinging to old habits, experiences and even harmful situations that we should let go of.

When we fail to let go and release these things that we need to leave behind, we are unable to create room to receive better experiences.

Healing starts with the first step of acknowledgement of your issues and positive reaffirmations. It becomes your beginning. A starting point to the journey of self-forgiveness and reconciliation. The affirmations open up your subconscious by telling it ‘that you are in charge.’ You are taking ownership of the changes that you need to make to get where you need to be.

Worry and fear are intermarried and no one likes how both make you feel, yet it’s often difficult to stop and they tend to grow in enormity until they become huge factors that occupy they mind of the troubled person.

Worrying can be helpful if it spurs you to take the necessary actions to solve a problem.

However, if you’re preoccupied with all the what if’s and the worst-case scenarios, it turns into fear and becomes a problem.

Persistent doubts and fears can be paralyzing because they will sap your emotional energy, raise your anxiety levels even induce possible panic attacks and affect your daily life as well as how you view things.

Persistent worrying is a mental habit that you can break, but it will require training your mind and body to stay calm while maintaining a more positive perspective towards life.

There’s a little trick that I’ve been implementing for years now and it’s helped me in enormous ways.

  • I created a worry period by choosing a specific time and mostly early in the morning when I wake up and about to do my meditative prayer. This way, I de-clutter my mind as much as possible and reduce all sources of anxiety before my day takes off. If possible choose a set time and place for worrying and during the worry period, let yourself dwell on the issues on your mind but for the rest of the day, maintain a worry-free zone.  The best way to get a handle on this is by writing down the things bothering you and go over them one by one, but only for the amount of time you’ve specified for it.

Having a period to worry over issues is effective because it helps you to break the habit of dwelling on them when you’ve got other things to do. You are neither suppressing these thoughts but simply apportioning time to them as you do your other daily activities and as you keep up with the practice you will find that you have the ability to postpone your anxious thoughts and to be in better control.

All the best.

Jacqueline

To draw a line between fear-based and love-based decisions can be daunting even when our choices are made out of love.

However, we can get better hold and clarity of our choices when we invest a little time in thinking over the basis of our decisions. Am I doing this because I am afraid? If I wasn’t afraid, would this still be my choice?

Try to get to that fearless place in your imagination and figure out those thoughts and decisions that still have energy and those that their fire has dwindled when the steam of anxiety/fear is taken out.

Choices made out of love and true conviction are far more enduring.

I absolutely love this book of poems. My favorites are “Love Rations” (for those who love to give the silent treatment) and “Beggars Supper” (which definitely pulls at the heart strings). Two thumbs up!!

Inspiring others

Each awakening moment of our lives offers us two main choices.

A choice on how to  treat and relate to others and a choice on how to treat ourselves.

Think about it for a moment and you will realise that everything we do is centred on these two main player’s; ourselves and others.

I’ve found that a bid to make a positive impact on other people’s lives never leaves the giver empty handed. In caring for others, we inadvertently care for ourselves.

The rewards are life changing and sometimes beyond your expectations.

May the lamp that  you carry not only cast light on your path. Let its flickers offer some brightness to those you encounter on your way.

Shalom!

Jacqueline
