What can I say? I have met some people who have fallen out and ended years of good relationship due to a difference in opinions that are sometimes insignificant.
I have witnessed heated and virulent arguments, even online where people degenerate far down to abusive vitriol when someone dares to disagree with their point of view and the question that always cross my mind is to wonder what kind of background the name-calling, combative person has?
If a person can’t get his/her point across in a clear, concise manner without the entire discussion degenerating into a World-war, then they should not bother getting into discussions at all.
Getting all heated up over issues that can either be by-passed or discussed like responsible humans is a no brainer. No one should waste their time on such non-productive ventures.
Opinions are what they are. Even if you are right, the other person reserves the right to disagree with you and your ability to handle the disagreement is where the maturity lies.
I have witnessed where people are brought around to a different line of thinking by the presentation of clear, unambiguous and empirical evidence.
Points of view are two-ways or even in some instances a multi-faceted traffic and as much as you like your voice heard, it’s possible the other person does so as well.

So true! Let’s just agree to disagree- that’s it.

I agree, and I also love when I am able to agree to disagree. Love this post!

I honestly don’t get it when people make noise over a no-brainer. It’s just time wasting and building up unnecessary bile.

Very true — some people always feel the need to be “right”. I know I am so I can allow others to express their opinions, even if I know they are wrong, lol!

It’s tiresome when you see adults squabbling over words. Ha!

Precisely. Let them feel happy in their rightness 😉

You are so wrong! I couldn’t disagree with you more…and to post such comments, ideas and thoughts…you’ve got some nerve!!!
HA! JUST KIDDING!!! Actually you are so right…sometimes my jaw drops when I read arguments that people have with each other online…and this is on a shopping website that has a tv channel. Some of the women either don’t like the hosts or the presenters of some lines and they are really mean and cruel. A few of them might all join up and agree with each other, while someone else jumps in to tactfully tell them they should not be so mean and then that person gets told to mind their own business and that’s the nice version.
Great post Jackie hope more people pay attention…hope I didn’t scare you with my first comments…you know I love you!! 🙂

What’s happened to respect for self and others ! ? It’s our unique-nesses and different-nesses (are they even words!) that make the world such a rich and interesting place.

Well- said Jacqueline. But sadly not many follow this. There is a difference between opinion and fact. But today everybody’s opinion is a “fact” for them and contradictory views are combated with. I have also seen these combats “online” and public place and how sad is that 😦

I don’t even bother to get mired in such nonsense. They can keep their facts if having a decent conversation is a challenge.

Well written.I had a different opinion from someone yesterday regarding the American presidential election. The person literally choked me with his opinion. Ofcourse, I stood my ground.I have no obligation to agree, just to make sure my opinions are factually true and I believe in them.

I honestly don’t understand why people feel that they have to force on their points on others

Most are incapable of dialogue or philosophical conversation, due to the faction within the soul and some strange binding up of self interest or self esteem with stated ideas that neither probably understood to begin with! Liberal arts education, as at St. John’s college here in the States, teaches this by practice and example, but no one at the big colleges even knows about these things, except maybe a few tucked away in a department at yer Harvards, Yales and U of M’s, who mostly do flattery of the rich donor with popular opinion topics that replace genuine study- though I’m sure they would vehemently disagree!

True, but a heated argument can just be passionate discussion 🙂 I come from an Italian background and my husband is Greek we will get loud but will agree to disagree in the end and no hard feelings. I say its good to vent sometimes, but not to hold grudges. I love when people disagree with me, as you said, I often learn something or gain a new perspective.
