The Last Confessions…Friday fiction in five sentences.

Odette’s body shook uncontrollably as she blindly read and re-read the note; a dying man’s last confessions and her tears brimmed over.

She had always known and believed that Joshua was innocent, but no one else believed him and justice jailed him on circumstantial evidence.

They had been too poor to hire a good lawyer and had to rely on the States miserable representation, which had been a pitiful fulfillment of obligation.

Now this! A note exonerating her husband after so many years of misery and when it was too late, since Joshua died in prison, a broken man.

In a desperate need to take a long walk, she left the note on the old wooden table, picked up her shawl and stepped out into the bitter-cold.

  1. This reminds me of the many people who are wrongly accused. You have the ability to stir up emotions in such a short story and envoke a desire to know more.

  2. Have you watched The Central Park 5? It’s so unfortunate that this kind of thing actually happens in real life….more than it should. They say that everyone in prison “claims” to be innocent. Unfortunately, there really are a few that actually are.

      1. 5 minority teens were accused of the rape and attempted murder of a Caucasian woman who was jogging in central park. They were innocent but NYPD forced comfessions out of them through brutal force. It’s very unfortunate what happened to those boys….one spent many years in Rikers….one of the toughest prisoners in America. The only thing that saved him eventually was when the real rapist finally confessed to the crime.

  3. Dear, I like your writing, but I have to say “thanks for cheering me up”. I’m laughing right now, because you really do put your words together well, but I plunged as I finished the paragraph. In the vernacular, I’m like “oh boo”. Anyhow, thanks for your posts, they elicit a lot of feelings.
