Whenever someone asks me what the best purchase I ever made was, I wonder why my mind simply drifts to the books that I have read and those that I look forward to reading?
Books are such ordinary things to call prized possessions, yet no gemstones like them have I found. Does this happen to you too?
My mind traces back to those books that have imparted valuable knowledge and fed my eclectic taste and senses.
I am always hard pressed to think of other material belongings that give me as much pleasure as my books and my Kindle does.
Is it my diamond encrusted ring? I do love it so and it always glows on my finger and makes me smile.
They say that diamonds are a girls best friend but I am still not yet so sure if it is truly mine. I appreciate it’s value but it is yet to speak to me.
Is it my latest pair of LV slippers? Yes they are certainly popping beautiful feet candy but not my prized possession.
Is it the fantastic new perfume of mysterious origin that I discovered at the Souk?
I have no idea what the name of the perfume means, since it is written in Arabic, but I must tell you that the fragrance is divine.
The list could go on and on but if the truth be told, none of these other things gives me the depth of satisfaction that books I have read gave me.
When I buy a book, it’s like I found a new friend. I usually can’t wait to curl up on my sofa or bed to get acquainted.
I always think that the cover of a book is like a door. Which gives me delightful glimpses of where I have not been before.
Sometimes it casts a spell, tickles, teaches or chastises. I always wonder when I knock what welcome there will be.
This little poem I wrote a while back will tell you more of my thoughts about books.
So what’s your best purchase of recent? Do share the fun, whatever that may be 🙂

Jennifer, I love anything that plays. Pop, Soul, afro, classical, jazz, reggae, Dancehall, I think I got it from my dad. He played an assortment of music all through my growing years so I just grew up loving all types. I choose what suits my mood of the moment 🙂

I love it. I too grew up listening to a variety of music. From my parents and my four older brothers. I love anything roots, blues, alternate, upbeat or with a beautiful message.

I love books! I would love a diamond too-but books remain number 1. I have been feeling like I am not reading enough, so I am going to pull up my socks on that department!

I love the smell and crinkle of real books 🙂 Ah! A library. That is one thing that I will address once I get back to a more permanent base.

I love that you compare the cover of a book to a door taking you somewhere new. So creative and I totally agree. My most prized possessions are definitely my books, photos of my family (esp. my dad who passed away a few years ago) and my laptop. 🙂

Books, computers and cameras. I wish I had a list of every book I’ve ever read, that would be so interesting. Computers because the internet helped me to find my Nigerian family and are a powerful writing and communication tool. Cameras because they are another way of using my creativity.

Whenever I hear material possession I too always think automatically to books. Shoot, I have more books than clothes, shoes etc. Books are my bestfriends.

Truly they are good friends. I have learnt that those other things are so transient whilst the knowledge gained from a reading stays with you 🙂

Ah! My happiest moment is being tucked into bed with a good book and some chocolates. That ‘New Book Smell’ is so heavenly to me, I could sniff it all day long with a big smile on my face.
Books are one of my most prized possessions, If I had to pick only three things to buy, a book will definitely be picked. I picture myself in old age doing nothing but reading all of my favourite books and relaxing. 🙂
“There is no friend as loyal as a book”- Ernest Hemingway. It is true! A good book holds your hand and takes you on a wonderful journey.
Best most recent acquisition is my new reading glasses. Lol
PS: I have read Ghana Must Go, it’s a very good book.
