As Fresh As Thyme…

Cooking, Mashed Potatoes, Photography

In auto mode, I quickly tossed ingredients into the bubbling sauce, rehashed a passage for my book in my head while trying to pay attention to the cacophony of my children’s voices milling around me in the kitchen.

They had just returned from school, each voice was relaying some information, each child wanted some form of attention and as usual, my three ears was listening to them, responding to their inquisition, addressing the accusation from my third child that I wasn’t paying him enough attention, stirring the saucepan, figuring out my passage and reminding myself respond to that request that had just popped into my mind as a reminder…and the crazy beat went on.

Why I haven’t gone batty is a question I ponder fleetingly. When will the hecticness stop, if ever?

My bubbly sauce was almost done, all that remained was to toss in the shredded fresh thyme and as I lifted the chopping board to scoop it in, I literally heard a voice whisper in my head, ‘enjoy the time.’

I smiled at the pun, enjoy the time while scooping in the thyme, but my ever roaming mind gripped those three words and allowed it to marinate.

I realized that in the near future these young children craving my attention right now would all fly out of my coop and spread their wings.

They will go in search of their own dreams and set up their own little spaces and they won’t be underfoot in the kitchen all talking at the same time.

The thought certainly gave me pause.

It reminds me that we should appreciate and enjoy each fresh moment of time that we are given.

To catch the time and hold it as close to our heart as possible because it’s delicate and fleeting.

I am reminded to gratefully relish these moments like no other because no two moments are the same.

Shall we eat?

Extra TLC…

Women are far more resilient than men and this is a fact. It is not a statement of feminism or trying to create a tug-of-war argument on which sex is stronger.1450633441794[1]

Our endurance faculties, pain threshold, multi-tasking abilities are light years ahead of that of men and you only have to take a good look at an average family woman with a household of children and a spouse to understand my analogy.

A man will have a minor headache and he turns into an attention seeking toddler.

When he has a flu, life almost grinds to a halt and the wife or partner automatically has a mental flu along with him.

On the contrary, in a lot of instances, a woman will be feeling down, yet you will see her juggling housework, family, work and the rest of the shebang like a pro.

It does not mean that she doesn’t appreciate nor needs TLC, but she just gets on with it and does the needful, most especially when you still have a young family to tend.

I have had a situation of being in pre-stages of labour and I was still struggling to conclude the cooking that I was doing before going to the hospital meanwhile, my husband was all flustered and palpitating that he practically hustled me out of the kitchen to the hospital where we then had to wait for hours before the main action started.

If I recall, I think I even quarreled with him for not letting me finish my cooking before harassing me to go and sit idle and experience every ounce of pain. I had preferred to stay busy and keep my mind occupied than panting and counting the minutes.

Years back when my children were still toddlers, there was no moment of respite. It was always go, go, go but now, they have learnt how to do quite a number of things themselves, so, just in case mummy is feeling poorly, they help to make me some sandwich and a nice warm cup of beverage to drink and my hubby then helps with the rubbing down and extra pampering. I never hesitate to ask.

Though there are those times that I feel cranky, snapping like a dragon and just want to be left alone, they know well enough to hide their heads while I am breathing fire, but such moments are so few and far between and they hardly last long.

Being a Mama confers on so many crowns of responsibilities and these multi-tasking are meant to be executed with your hands tied behind your back, your eyes closed, with loads of grace and as cool as a cucumber. Yeah right!

…….and the list goes on endlessly!

Sometimes, I am not quite sure whether the assignments the teacher gives in school is meant for the child or for me and to test my patience.

Now, let me go and put on my draughtsman, architect, site worker hat on! We (I and my young son) have to continue his new class project of building the Dubai’s Burj Al Arab with hardboard, tin foil, colours, glues and all sorts of fun stuff. He is the main director of this act.

Work in Progress, Burj Al Arab construction. Ha! ;-)
Work in Progress, Burj Al Arab construction. Ha! 😉

It took the builders 6 years to do the original building and now we are expected to get our replica done in a few days.

As you can see from the picture by the side, it is work in progress and we are making a mangled mess of it (but having fun though).

Let’s hope it turns out fair at the end of this patience inducing exercise and then I can continue building my blog.

Enjoy the multi-tasking hats that motherhood confers on you.

How many hats do you wear so far?
