Lovingly he fingered the delicate pearls clasped around her neck.
At first, they belonged to his grandmother, who passed them to his mother and she passed them to his wife.
She looked beautiful as she lay so still, just as though she slept.
With trembling fingers and a heavy heart, he unhooked the beautiful strand of
pearls that has been worn by the women in his family for ages.
He knew that she loved them very much and would want their little girl to inherit it when she comes of age.

They mean a lot to us, for their intrinsic values I guess.

So much story packed into so little space! So sad, yet the idea of the heirloom being passed on is touching. Lovely piece!

love it! This little tale is relevant on so many levels…heirlooms are so important to family continuity. I have things of my grandmother’s with notes attached–warnings to cherish and preserve (whatever it is.) Sentimentality is important.

Thank you Gradmama. They are really important, not just for the value of the heirloom but the sentimentality attached like you rightly pointed out.

A very beautiful story. So much can be said in a few sentences.
I had a set of pearls like that, handed down from my mother, from her mother, from her mother. I use to only wear them on special occasion. When I was 20, I decided to wear them on a special dinner. Someone stole the necklace, and one of the matching earrings, while I was wearing them. It was a crowded restaurant. I didn’t realize what was going on until the thief tried to take the second earring. ..long time ago. I enjoyed your story!

Wow! How interesting! I hope that the thief was apprehended. Such family heirlooms can hurt when they go missing, especially those delicate ones.

Short but says a lot about what she meant to him…i guess their love was deep. On the other hand i am thinking…was the pearl more important than the people who had worn it? Again the pearl represents a legacy…just seeing the many sides of your story…simply artistic Jacqueline!

Awww, so heartbreaking.
Only five sentences yet I imagined how they met, how their love grew, their wedding day, the birth of their daughter, her illness, their hope of recovery, her health deteriorating until she passed.
Life can be sad. 😦
You know how to mold words o! Beautiful.
