Sometimes when things don’t go the way we want them, they went the way they were supposed to.
The way forward is to make the best of the way things turn out, not to expend time and energy fighting what we can’t change, but to spend that time and energy finding new ways for things to go because every moment that you spend fighting over the past and how things were are moments lost to creating how things could be.

Absolutely! Wisdom means knowing which things we can change and which things we can’t.

So true! It’s no use crying over something which is beyond our control.

Crying over it won’t change it.

Sometimes I know I want to stop thinking about the past and move forward but the thoughts and memories return. After breathing and noticing the sensations in my body, I ask myself what needs the memories are connecting me to — what’s alive in me now? Sometimes it’s a need for learning from a regret. I might make a note or seek to repair a conversation/relationship. Sometimes it’s to mourn the loss – what needs were being met by the way things were? Ease? Reassurance? Connection? Predictability? Connecting with the energy of those needs in my body seems to naturally make it easier for me to move forward in this moment. An action often arises gently in me, free of shame or anger or demand. It’s so sweet and can take a while sometimes. I learned that approach from a mix of nonviolent communication (rosenberg’s book) and also listening to teachers like Pema Chodron and Raphael Cushnir. Is this helpful to hear?

I like your thorough approach and quite helpful. I think taking that time to understand what one feels is vital.

Indeed we should look at other sides.

Oh yes, I absolutely agree with you. There’s no point fighting the flow.

Precisely. Spending energy on what one cannot change or influence is unproductive. Adapting to the situation becomes more creative within the available time.
